If you love to read and have a special interest in works by writers of color, you’ve come to the right place!
Throughout my extensive career as an English professor, I have been passionate about sharing my love of literature with students. And in my new role as author, independent scholar, and social entrepreneur, I am especially excited to share that love with you.
Much of the material you will find here is based on my book, Culturally Responsive Reading: Teaching Literature for Social Justice, which highlights my guided approach to culturally responsive reading: the LIST Paradigm. Endorsed by award-winning educator Dr. Gholdy Muhammad (Cultivating Genius) and Pulitzer prize-winning author Junot Díaz (The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao), my book has been selected as a Reading Group Guide by the Colorado Book Club Resource and nominated as a finalist in General Nonfiction by the Colorado Authors League (CAL).
But I also draw extensively on my forthcoming book Culturally Responsive Reading: 50 Key Concepts (currently a work-in-progress). Consequently, you will find discussions of classic and contemporary works alongside explorations of key terms and concepts critical to the understanding of multicultural literature.
Inspired largely by African American writers such as James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, August Wilson, and Ernest Gaines, my work is also informed by mindfulness meditation. So I invite readers to slow down, savor the reading experience, and cultivate emotional and intellectual connections with the writer’s work. Ultimately, my goal is to help readers expand their worldview by contemplating the profound connections between the Zen concept of interbeing and the critical concept of intertextuality.
Thank you for visiting my site!
My website also serves as a platform for my LitUnlocked workshops and webinars, designed to create community by helping readers access and analyze literature through the lens of culture.
I look forward to continuing our conversation!
